Hi

Just how important is KS1? Apparently it is used to stream/set in Y3 in DDs school. I understand that part of it is a test and the rest is teacher assessment. If you would like your DC to sit the 11 plus should we expect a level 3 at this stage and if she gets a level 2 realise that 11 plus is out of the question?

Any experiences?

Hi Spice,
I think all schools are different but I think the KS1 sats results do make a difference to your childs schooling, my daughter got level 3 in her sats and you do seem to find they put all the higher attaining children together and seem to give them tougher work etc.

I think that what level your child attains in KS1 sats are a good indication of their ability to do well in the 11-plus. My daughter has just sat the 11-plus, still have a couple of months till we find out the results :? .we have no idea how she got on but thought it was worth a try and she was keen to do it.
But generally I think people say that when your child is in year 5, ask their teacher what level your child in expected to get in the Ks2 sats , if its level 5 then it might be worth having a go at the 11-plus. Good luck!! :D

Thanks Essex Stardust for your response. I think a level 3 at this stage is not going to happen not that DD is not capable but I feel she has been pigeon holed since reception, she goes to school in an affluent area we live out of catchment and for some reason they see her as a 'disadvantaged child' which is not the case, then they dropped the bombshell in Yr 1 that she has been struggling with reading anyway to cut a long story short she has worked very hard and made a huge amount of progress, I am just hoping that even if she is not level three that she is a good average and continues to make good progress towards KS2.Talking to Mums in the playground they are not concerned about KS1 I was just wanted to know if they are taken seriously by anyone else in case I thought it was just me.
Good luck with the 11 plus? What schools have you applied for?

Hi spice, well done to your daughter working so hard to catch up. I wouldn't really worry about the KS1 sats results I dont think it makes that much difference, i think they are mainly just for the schools records rather than the parents or childs. My daughter was struggling with her keyword and reading when she was in year 1 but all of sudden she just seemed to understand things and now she is in a top group, so if your daughter continues to work hard you never know what they can achieve.
We have put Westcliff grammar school as our 1st choice, we dont really expect her to get in but it would be nice, its a lovely school.

It is a lovely school but we would be way out of catchment, we are in Havering no 11 plus but was considering Westcliff, KEGS or Chelmsford.
Our first choice at the moment is Coopers but we are still out of catchment so may have to consider the independent sector but its a long way off yet and I keep changing my mind!
Very best of luck to your dd for Westcliffe.
